John "Skillet" Ulmschneider

Upper Marlboro, MD – The Prince Georgeโ€™s County man who shot and killed a firefighter and critically injured another Friday, April 15, 2016, has been sentenced to four years in prison. Darrell Lumpkin, 62 of Temple Hills, was indicted in Prince Georgeโ€™s County last July on six counts related to illegal possession of firearms. Lumpkin was previously convicted of assault in Washington, DC in the 1980s and was therefore disqualified from owning weapons.

The prison sentence was handed down Friday, April 14.
Firefighter/paramedic John โ€œSkilletโ€ Ulmschneider, 37, (pictured, right) a St. Maryโ€™s County resident who was a volunteer with the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department, was shot to death when he and another firefighter forced their way into Lumpkinโ€™s home in order to check on his welfare. A relative had requested the welfare check and told authorities Lumpkin may have suffered a medical emergency. Lumpkin opened fire on the men, killing Ulmschneider and seriously wounding Firefighter Kevin Swain, 19.

In addition to the .380 semi-automatic handgun Lumpkin used in the shooting, police also recovered two other handguns, one 40-caliber gun and a 25-caliber gun, from Lumpkinโ€™s home.
