Maryland Has Largest Single-Day Spike in COVID-19 Cases; Hospitalizations Down

***The Maryland Department of Health has information that is not current with what St. Mary’s and Calvert County Health Department officials are reporting. At this time, St. Mary’s County is showing 160 positive cases. Calvert County is reporting 163 cases.***

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — As of Friday morning at roughly 10 a.m., the Maryland Department of Health(MDH) is confirming a total of 23,472 cases of the novel coronavirus(COVID-19) across the state of Maryland, while there are going to be more results that are presumably still waiting to be confirmed.

This new total means there are at least 1,730 newly confirmed cases in the past 24 hours.

Of the confirmed cases, over 1668 people are currently hospitalized, which is a decrease of 43 compared to what was recorded in the past day.

1,517 previously infected people have been released from their isolation according to MDH, 85 of which have been recorded in the past day.

51 people in the state have died from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the state’s death toll unfortunately up to 1,098. As of April 29, MDH is reporting data from nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes with 10 or more occupants. With this newly released data today, so far 546 people living under these specified conditions have died from presumable COVID-19 cases, as well as eight staff members.

Negative test results also grew, with at least 4,894 negative confirmations in the past day, bring that total to 97,511.

At this time, there are at least 934 officially confirmed cases in the Southern Maryland region. Charles County saw their previously confirmed total of 564 cases rise to 611. In Calvert County, cases are now being counted on a rolling basis, which brings their total to 163, up eight from yesterday.

St. Mary’s County also counts cases on a rolling basis now, and records from the county show a total of 160 cases as of 10:30 a.m. Additionally, St. Mary’s is now reporting it’s seventh death in the county. We still do not have any details about this individual at this time, but will provide an update when we receive new information.

A majority of the positive cases across the state are still found in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County. PG County still has the most cases of any county in the state, with an overnight increase of at least 692 cases bringing the total to 6,735.

Since yesterday, Montgomery County saw an increase of at least 454 newly recorded cases, bringing their total to at least 4,754.

Anne Arundel County has also confirmed 82 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing their official total to 1,807.

On April 30, the total number of confirmed cases by the Maryland Department of Health was at least 21,751. As of May 1, that recorded number is at least 23,475, showing over a 7.9% increase across the state in the past 24 hours.
