LA PLATA, Md. — Two people were airlifted to a trauma center Saturday afternoon after their Jeep overturned and trapped both occupants on Mason Springs Road. The crash brought down power lines and required complex extrication operations.

Charles County emergency units responded to Mason Springs Road around 4:17 p.m. on October 4, 2025, for reports of an overturned vehicle with occupants trapped. According to dispatch, the Jeep was found on its side with two people trapped inside and wires down at the scene. Emergency crews immediately established command and were reported to have requested helicopter transport for both patients.

A Battalion Chief established incident command around 4:25 p.m. and confirmed two occupants were trapped inside the overturned Jeep. A different unit assumed command operations while a specially trained squad handled the extrication group. The crash scene required careful coordination due to downed power lines creating additional hazards for rescue operations.

Dispatch transmits that emergency crews blocked Mason Springs Road in both directions until Verizon could respond to address the downed utility poles and power lines. Meanwhile, paramedics classified both victims as Priority 1 adult patients requiring immediate trauma center care. The crash mechanism involving vehicle rollover with entrapment prompted a high priority helicopter response.

Emergency crews successfully extricated both victims around 4:34 p.m. after approximately 20 minutes of rescue operations. The victims were identified as a 65-year-old male and a 65-year-old female. The male victim reportedly sustained a possible loss of consciousness and a 6-inch laceration to the skull.

The female victim sustained multiple arm fractures and what EMS noted as an ‘unstable pelvic area’, indicating significant trauma from the rollover crash. Both patients were conscious and breathing when paramedics loaded them for helicopter transport. Air Care 1 and Eagle 2 helicopters responded to transport both critical patients to UM Capital Region Medical Center.

The helicopters established a landing zone at Pisgah Park to facilitate safe patient loading and transport operations. The condition of both patients has not been officially released by hospital authorities.
