Would you like to be part of a World Record?ย With your help, the Calvert Library is participating in a nationwide effort to gain the world record for the most people playing the same board game.ย The Calvert Library Prince Frederick is joining hundreds of libraries across the country on this Saturday, Nov. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. for the first annual celebration of โNational Gaming Day @ Your Library.โย We will be playing the game Pictureka! by Hasbro.
While the library is still all about books, they have also discovered how gaming really complements reading.ย Most video games require constant reading and problem-solving.ย They are engaging and adjust to the level of skill of the player as they โlevel upโ the better they get.ย ย Both board games and video games help kids learn to strategize, predict outcomes, and manage resources. Video games often require reading maps, tracking complex statistics, multitasking, and improving hand-eye coordination. In a technology heavy world, we have an obligation to our children to attract them to technology early and often.ย
The Calvert Library offers regular gaming events throughout the year. Every first Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. is Scrabble Time at the Calvert Library Prince Frederick. There are also Teen Gaming Nights every other month on the First Friday at 6:30 p.m. โTweensโ have their chance on second Fridays of the month. There are a wide variety of Nintendo Wii gaming events at the Calvert Library as well.
Check the library calendar of events through www.calvert.lib.md.us for details.ย The Saturday event will be a
great social or family outing. There will be Nintendo Wiis, Pictureka!, and other board games available for play as we aid in the attempt to establish a record for the largest number of people playing the same board game at the same time!
National Gaming Day is a national initiative supported by the American Library Association, and 2008 sponsors are Hasbro, Top Trumps, and Wizards of the Coast.ย
