VALLEY LEE, Md. — A one-year-old girl was airlifted to a pediatric trauma center Saturday morning, Dec. 20, after suffering serious burn injuries at a home in St. Mary’s County.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 8:58 a.m. to the 18600 block of Piney Point Road in Valley Lee for a reported burn victim. The child sustained circumferential burns to her left arm, with additional possible burn injuries to her right hip consistent with splatter exposure.

First responders reported the toddler was alert and intermittently responsive, acting appropriately for her age, and was able to take water while being evaluated at the scene.

Firefighters established a landing zone in a field across from the former Second District Volunteer Fire Department station to accommodate Maryland State Police Trooper 2. The child was subsequently flown to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., for specialized treatment.

The cause of the burns was not immediately released.
