Patrick W. Brooks

Leonardtown, MD— On Feb.22, Judge. Karen Abrams sentencedย Patrick W. Brooks, 28, of Mechanicsville to serve three months of backup time after testing positive for opiates and not reporting it to his parole officer.

ย Ryan Posey, who was Brooks’ attorney, stated, “He goes to recovery classes every day, part of the trouble he has is that he does not have a car at this time. However, his boss says he is a hard-working employee. In fairness it has taken him some time to get this treatment. He makes it severe.”

Brooks’ parole officer requested that Brooks receive the maximum backup time, due to his noncompliance with reporting in. The parole officer felt as if Brooks was wasting everyone’s time.ย

When Abrams asked Brooks if there was anything he wanted to say the defendant replied, “I wish I had a vehicle so I could go to work and go to my treatment. I am very sorry to everyone.”ย

Abrams handed down her sentence and also gave Brooks a message for him to think about when he is servingย his backup time which was, “Here is my problem. All your jail time was suspended, and you don’t comply with the probation guidelines. So it seems probation is not right for you and I understand your problems. However you can’t be a good father or worker if you’re an addict.”ย

Also, to the three months of backup time Brooks will serve, he was granted work release and has to successfully complete a drug treatment program.ย
