Lusby, MD – The Seventh annual Race to the Creek 5 Kilometer (K) race gave Independence Day revelers in Southern Maryland an early start to the holiday. With mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 70s the dash got underway shortly after 8 a.m., starting and finishing at Patuxent High School (PHS).
Dave Walser, the race organizer who also coaches track at PHS, announced the field of 90 was the second largest in the race’s brief history. The event is the largest fundraiser for the PHS track and field program.
The Aris family certainly fared well, as Ben Aris, 16 was the top finisher, completing the course in 18 minutes and 22 seconds while Liam Aris, also 16, finished third with a time of 18 minutes and 56 seconds. Logging a time of 18 minutes and 29 seconds and finishing second was Kevin O’Clair, 20. The top female finisher was Hannah Aris, who ran the race in 21 minutes and four seconds.
The Race to the Creek is so named because Mill Creek Middle School is the halfway or turnaround mark. The fairly steep design of Southern Connector Boulevard gives the dash a fairly challenging component.
In lieu of medals, several local businesses, including Rita’s, Roy Rogers and Sweet Frog, contributed gift cards for the race’s top finishers.
