A trio of retired St. Maryโs County teachers has collaborated on a childrenโs book that is perfect for this time of year. The book aimed at pre-school children is called โHalloween Fright On A Chesapeake Night.โ It tells the story of an adventurous trio of black cats who wonder out trick or treating and wind up being frightened themselves.
Ellynne Brice Davis is the author. Davis taught elementary school music and English-as-a-Second Language. She holds a Bachelorsโ degree in Voice from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johnsย Hopkins University and Mastersโ degrees in Voice and in Speech Communication from West Virginia University.
Joyce Judd is the illustrator. She retired from teaching middle school in St. Maryโs County and has found herself in a new and satisfying career as an illustrator. Halloween Fright on a Chesapeake Night is her third book. She has also illustrated Ellynneโs Top Tomato Cookbook by Ellynne Brice Davis and Spencer the Trick-or-Treat Spider by Frances Hayes. โCollaborating with fellow retirees on these projects has given us a wonderful sense of purpose that we hope will result in enjoyment for our readers.โ
Myra Raspa is the bookโs Editor-in-Chief. She taught high school English and Publications before becoming the Writing Specialist for the school system. She has enjoyed her collaboration with fellow retirees Ellynne Davis and Joyce Judd on Halloween Fright on a Chesapeake Night. Their first book together, Ellynneโs Top Tomato Cookbook, provided many hours of fun and tasty luncheons as Ellynne worked through her recipes. Myra is currently writing a childrenโs book and an anthology of her poetry.
The clever words and illustrations of the book are augmented with a book cover song and a guide to how to make a black-cat hand puppet. It is in its second printing, which was done by the Printing Press in Leonardtown.
