According to Maryland International Racewayโ€™s self promo, this Saturday, May 3, the Mountain Motor Nationals is, โ€œthe race where we throw away the rulebook – ANYTHING GOES!

See 800 c.i. 6.3 second, 220+ MPH Mountain Motor Pro Stocks plus the MIR Pro Mod Frantic 7’s. It’s the most famous race anywhere, don’t miss it!โ€

Royce Miller, owner of MIR, said the gates will open at 11 a.m. and the speedway will show off its brand new additions. The raceway resurfaced all the old 1960s asphalt, built a great new concession stand and new bathroom facilities.

โ€œWe want to give our race fans a great experience like they would at the very best tracks and sporting events,โ€ Miller stated while showing off his new facilities.

He indicated that the nationally known track has been in perpetual state of construction since 1999 and that MIR only has one more project to finish. When asked what he would do when all the construction was complete Miller said, โ€œWeโ€™ll enjoy the races and concentrate on promotions and expanding our racing programs.โ€

The current renovations set him back $850,000, but he feels it is worth it to ensure his fans get the very best experience. That is what drives Miller, his wife and son. They have owned the track for 19 years and eat, sleep and breathe drag racing.

โ€œIt is all about the fans. Everything we do is designed to make them have a better experience,” Miller told The Bay Net.

In the wake of the tragic event, this past winter in Accokeek, MD, Miller, started Friday night Street Legal Only contests called Midnight Madness.

โ€œWe only allow street legal cars and make the racing cheap.โ€ It only costs $20 to race street legal cars and $10 to watch the fun matches. โ€œIt has really become popular,โ€ Miller said.

He feels that tragedies like the street-racing nightmare that saw people killed on Route 210 in Accokeek could have been avoided if more people had a place to race legally.
