WALDORF, Md. — A Union Bridge man was arrested after allegedly carrying out a return fraud scheme at a Home Depot in Waldorf, according to court documents.

Joshua Costa, 42, of Union Bridge, was taken into custody April 7, 2026, following an incident at the Home Depot located on Jefferson Farm Place.

According to charging documents, Costa entered the store and filled a shopping cart with merchandise before taking the items to the return desk without having purchased them. Investigators say he received store credit for the items and then left the store with additional merchandise valued at more than $1,000.

Loss prevention personnel later located Costa in the parking lot and detained him until deputies arrived. Authorities identified him using a U.S. passport and confirmed his identity during the investigation.

Officials reported the total value of the theft was approximately $1,034.87. The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to the store.

Costa was transported to the Charles County Detention Center and charged with theft between $100 and $1,500.

He was later released on his own recognizance.

A trial scheduling hearing is set for May 29, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
