The St. Maryโ€™s County Board of Education on June 25 honored the parent and legal guardian volunteers in the school system.

Each year the Maryland Department of Education, with the support of sponsor the Target Corporation, conducts a Parent Involvement Matters Award (PIMA). It is the nationโ€™s first such award for parent volunteers.

According to Acting Assistant Superintendent of Instruction J. Scott Smith, โ€œParents and legal guardians are nominated for demonstrating significant, positive impact in their education communities.โ€

ย

Areas of volunteer involvement considered for the award include: Communication, Volunteering, Learning, Decision Making and Community Collaboration. According to Smith, โ€œThe programโ€™s slogan โ€˜Choose Your Seat, Get Involvedโ€™ illustrates the point that Maryland parents and legal guardians are involved in a wide range of activities to support their public schools and encourages all parents to get involved whatever way they can.โ€

This year Heather Foster of Leonardtown Elementary School was a state award finalist. Other St. Maryโ€™s nominees present at the award ceremony were: Emily Lewis of George Washington Carver E.S., Laura Lang of Green Holly E.S., and Jason Mandeville of Mechanicsville E.S. Nominees not present were Sarah Wingo of Benjamin Banneker E.S., Lee Rosenstadt of Chesapeake Public Charter School, Teresa Klauda-Spalding of Hollywood E.S. and Marlene Valenzuela of Piney Point E.S.
