Even before a flake has formed a host of schools shut their doors and bustle children home early today. The skies in St. Maryโs look a frozen white, on this first day of school closings. The warm weather that persisted into November seems long ago as people today begin rummaging for windshield scrapers and warm boots. With just under three weeks to Christmas, winter is certainly upon us.
Charles County was the first to announce that their public schools will be closing two hours early in anticipation of dangerous weather. They were closely followed by Anne Arundel County, which is also closing schools two hours early. At 11:12 am St. Maryโs County announced a variety of school closings, beginning as early as 11:50 a.m., due to inclement weather and the โThreat of hazardous road conditions.โ
In St. Maryโs County, middles schools, except for Margaret Brent, will dismiss at 11:50 a.m.ย High Schools, Alternative Learning Center, Margaret Brent Middle School, Greenview Knolls Elementary School, and George Washington Carver Elementary School will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. Hollywood Elementary School will dismiss at 1 p.m. Green Holly Elementary School and Lexington Park Elementary School will dismiss at 1:05 p.m.ย Park Hall and Leonardtown Elementary Schools will dismiss at 1:15 p.m.ย All other elementary schools will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. today.
All P.M. pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and Forrest Center classes have been cancelled, as well as all after-school and evening activities.
St. Maryโs County Recreation and Parks have announced afternoon and evening leisure and sports programs in the schools are cancelled for the day, and an announcement regarding Recreation, Parks and Community Services programs at the Great Mills Pool, Gymnastics Center, Regional Park, Margaret Brent and Leonard Hall Recreation Centers will be made no later than 3:00 p.m.. Meanwhile stores are likely to see a rush of business this afternoon as people stock up on essentials in preparation for what is thought to be an impending snow storm, and for the start of the winter weather, which has been predicted to be particularly harsh this year.
