The Calvert County Board of Education (BOE) was presented an overview of the school systemโ€™s current employee statistics during a Thursday, Dec. 6 work session prior to their monthly meeting. The report was presented by Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) Human Resources Director Kevin Michael.

According to Michael, CCPS currently has 2,164 employeesโ€”teachers, support staff and administratorsโ€”serving a student population some 50 pupils shy of 16,000. Michael reported there has been a 3.7 percent reduction of staff from the 2011- 2012 school year to the current 2012 -2013 school year.

While several positions were terminated last year, Michael stated that the latest reductions have been through โ€œnormal attrition,โ€ i.e. retirements and resignations.

Michael indicated budgetary constraints and a significant decrease in student enrollment have been the fulcrum for the reductions in workforce. He also reported that while CCPS once offered incentives when recruiting news teachers that tactic no longer needs to be employed.

Board President Rose C. Crunkleton asked Michael what advice he would give CCPS students who aspire to be educators. โ€œMake yourself marketable,โ€ Michael replied. โ€œMath, chemistry, physicsโ€”these continue to be strong areas.โ€

Michael also shared employee demographics, which showed CCPS has 344 white male employees, 120 African-American males, no Hispanics, two Asian Pacific Islanders and one Native American male. The school system employees 1,458 white females, compared with 222 African-Americans, six Hispanics, eight Asian/ Pacific Islanders and three Native Americans.
