CALIFORNIA, Md. — Southern Maryland is facing another day of sweltering heat and potentially dangerous storms, as the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch from 2 p.m. to midnight Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Temperatures across St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert counties are expected to rise into the upper 80s and low 90s, with high humidity levels contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions. Numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening, some of which could become severe.

Forecasters warn that storms may produce damaging wind gusts and rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour. These conditions could lead to scattered instances of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, along creeks and streams, and in urban zones with poor drainage, including parts of Lexington Park, Waldorf, and Prince Frederick.
The hazardous weather outlook also includes the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, the tidal Potomac River, and the I-95 corridor through central Maryland, northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Residents are advised to stay alert, monitor local forecasts, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Flooding may persist in some areas into early Thursday morning.
