CALIFORNIA, Md. — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for much of Maryland, including the southern counties of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s, until 10 p.m. Thursday, June 26.
Forecasters say damaging winds are the primary concern, with storms expected to develop during the afternoon and evening hours. A Flood Watch is also in place until midnight for portions of the region, including all three southern counties, due to the potential for excessive rainfall.
Storm activity is expected to increase ahead of an approaching backdoor front from the northeast. Thunderstorms may also form along terrain boundaries to the west, leading to repeated rounds of heavy rain over the same areas. Rainfall totals of one to two inches are possible, with isolated locations receiving up to four inches in a short period.
The combination of heavy rainfall and saturated ground could lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying or poor-drainage areas. Flooding may also occur in urban zones and along small streams and creeks.
