WALDORF, Md. – The Department of Public Works Utilities experienced a spill of heavily diluted sewage water into the Mattawoman Creek on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10 and 11. The piping system that brings sewage to the Mattawoman Treatment Plant was inundated with rain water due to the rare but severe rain event on Feb. 10 and 11.

This rain event brought nearly 5 inches of rain to the County in a very short period of time. Unfortunately, there was no effective method to contain the spill and therefore it mixed into the Creek. Reporting notification was given to the Maryland Department of Environment and the Charles County Health Department, as required.
