WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man was charged with felony drug distribution after investigators recovered suspected crack cocaine, a digital scale, razor blades, cash and packaging materials during a narcotics investigation, according to charging documents.
William Jerome Middleton, 71, of Waldorf, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute narcotics, possession of a controlled dangerous substance that was not cannabis and possession of CDS paraphernalia following an investigation on June 1, 2026.
The case began around 2:11 p.m. when detectives with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Section conducted surveillance at the McDonald’s at 3300 Leonardtown Road in Waldorf. Investigators were watching a red Chrysler 300 with Virginia registration after receiving information about a suspicious vehicle at the restaurant.
Charging documents state detectives observed the Chrysler enter the rear parking lot before leaving without purchasing food or using the business. Investigators continued surveillance and later watched the driver pick up and drop off passengers at a nearby residence before returning to the McDonald’s parking lot.
A short time later, detectives observed a black Chevrolet pickup truck enter the rear parking lot and park near the Chrysler. Middleton was identified as the sole occupant of the pickup truck.
According to charging documents, Middleton approached the driver of the Chrysler, and the two men briefly interacted before the Chrysler left the parking lot. Investigators noted that the interaction appeared consistent with a brief hand-to-hand drug transaction based on their training and experience.
An officer approached Middleton in the passenger seat of the Chevrolet pickup truck. While speaking with him, the officer observed multiple folds of U.S. currency tucked into the crease of the driver’s seat and two partially smoked rolled cannabis cigarettes inside the vehicle.
Middleton provided identification and was found to have a prior narcotics-related history, including possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances, according to charging documents.
A K-9 unit responded and conducted a scan of the vehicle. The K-9 gave a positive alert to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle.
During a search, investigators recovered a folded amount of U.S. currency and a cellphone from Middleton’s pants pocket. A search of the pickup truck led to the recovery of multiple folded lottery tickets, a functional digital scale, approximately 1.10 grams of suspected crack cocaine, a corner tear of a plastic bag containing suspected cannabis and several used razor blades.
Investigators also recovered additional folds of currency from the vehicle. Charging documents list the total amount of U.S. currency recovered as $482.
The suspected crack cocaine tested positive for cocaine base using a TruNarc analyzer, according to charging documents. Investigators listed the approximate street value at $220.
Middleton was transported to the Charles County Detention Center. Court records show he was held without bond on June 1 and again held without bond following a June 2 bond review before Judge Patrick J. Devine. Following a further bail review on June 10 before Judge Mary C. Reese, Middleton remained held without bond.
A preliminary hearing is set for July 1 in Charles County District Court.
