SOLOMONS, Md. — Once Independence Day celebrations are over, Maryland residents still have some exciting events to look forward to this July.

Specifically, organizations in Calvert County are hosting unique animal-themed events that locals and tourists alike will want to jump on.

The Calvert Marine Museum is bringing back Sharkfest, its annual event in celebration of sharks. Sharkfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, located at 14200 Solomons Island Road, Solomons.

This popular annual event features live sharks that visitors can learn about and touch, in addition to a full day of “jaw-some” fun that includes shark-themed crafts, interactive education stations and hands-on activities. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, and advance tickets are recommended.

Later in the month, animal enthusiasts can enjoy Insectival at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center on Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is exactly what it sounds like: a festival all about insects. This indoor/outdoor event includes an insect zoo, a natural insect display and a butterfly tent full of live butterflies. Guests can enjoy exhibits set up by the event partners, and food and drink will be available for purchase.

Insectival is a rain-or-shine event, so ticketholders should check the weather and dress accordingly.

Both the Calvert Marine Museum and the Annmarie Sculpture Garden are well-loved organizations that put on numerous events during the year. Sharks and insects might be scary to some, but these groups are looking to bring a fun and educational perspective to the people of Southern Maryland.
