PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Friends of Calvert County Seniors (FCCS) is proud to announce it has received a $3,000 grant through the CoBank Sharing Success Program, made possible by the generous support of Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO).
The funding will provide critical, last-chance emergency assistance to older adults in Calvert County who are facing unexpected financial hardships. The grant will help seniors obtain essential necessities such as medications, utility assistance, housing-related expenses and emergency dental care — often serving as the last available resource when no other assistance exists.
Since 1998, Friends of Calvert County Seniors has served as a safety net for older adults experiencing financial emergencies. Operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, the organization works closely with local agencies to ensure that seniors receive timely assistance while preserving their dignity and independence.
“We are deeply grateful to SMECO and CoBank for recognizing the importance of helping vulnerable older adults in our community,” said Harriet Yaffe, board president of Friends of Calvert County Seniors. “A small grant can make an enormous difference in the life of seniors who are choosing between paying for medication, keeping the lights on, putting food on the table or staying in their current living situation. This support allows us to respond quickly when our neighbors need us most.”
The CoBank Sharing Success Program matches charitable contributions made by CoBank customers, enabling organizations like SMECO to increase their investment in local nonprofits, which strengthens the local community. The program reflects the cooperative principle of “Concern for Community” by supporting organizations that address critical local needs.
