WALDORF, Md. — Four Southern Maryland gamers have proven that national champions don’t have to come from major esports arenas or big cities.

A team of dedicated players from Scary Strokes in Waldorf recently captured first place in Virtuix’s quarterly Omni Arena National Championship, outperforming teams from 48 Omni Arena locations across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The victory earned each team member — Kaleb, William, Conner and Joshua — a Virtuix Omni One home virtual reality treadmill, valued at approximately $3,000.

While the players brought home the title, Scary Strokes owner Doug Roth told The BayNet the championship reflects something even bigger than a winning score.

“It’s exciting not only for Scary Strokes, but for the entire Southern Maryland community,” he said. “It shows that world-class competitive gaming isn’t limited to major cities. Players right here in Waldorf can compete with, and beat, the best teams in North America.”

Unlike traditional video games played from a couch with a controller, the Omni Arena is a full-body virtual reality experience that requires players to run, duck, dodge and communicate while navigating immersive digital worlds together.

For Scary Strokes, watching the team’s success unfold over several weeks was exciting from the very beginning.

“We knew they were posting outstanding scores early in the competition,” Doug said. “As the weeks went on and they consistently remained at or near the top of the national leaderboard, we realized they had a real chance to bring a championship home to Waldorf.”

According to Doug, the championship wasn’t won by a single standout player but through teamwork.

“Communication and teamwork are what separate them from other teams,” he said. “Success comes from working together, adapting to different situations, trusting one another and developing strategies over time.”

Those relationships, he said, have developed naturally over countless hours of practice inside the arena.

The four players have become familiar faces at Scary Strokes, forming friendships through competition while encouraging one another and welcoming new players into the gaming community.

That sense of community is something Doug says many people don’t expect from gaming.

“Omni Arena is one of the most social gaming experiences available today,” he said. “Players are constantly communicating, encouraging one another, celebrating victories and solving challenges together.”

Since opening nearly a decade ago, Scary Strokes has worked to become more than just an entertainment venue. The family-owned business hosts birthday parties, fundraisers, youth events, mini golf, arcade competitions and virtual reality tournaments, creating a place where people of all ages can gather and connect.

Doug hopes the team’s accomplishment encourages others to give virtual reality gaming a chance, even if they’ve never considered themselves gamers.

“You don’t have to be an experienced gamer to enjoy Omni Arena,” he said. “Many first-time players discover they’re naturally good at it because it relies on movement, teamwork and having “fun” more than years of gaming experience.”

For Doug, that’s what makes this championship meaningful.

“It proves that extraordinary opportunities exist right here in our own community.”

As the team celebrates its national title, Doug hopes their journey inspires others across Southern Maryland to step onto the Omni Arena for the first time.

“You never know where your first game might lead.”
