
WALDORF, Md. — St. Charles High School senior Tyler Owens was recognized for his achievements on and off the field Saturday, Dec. 13, receiving a $2,500 Chick-fil-A academic scholarship during the Maryland Senior All-Star Challenge at Oxon Hill High School.
Owens was recognized at the annual PG vs. SMAC Classic, a regional all-star football event that brings together top seniors from Southern Maryland and Prince George’s County. The Chick-fil-A scholarship is presented to a student-athlete who exemplifies leadership, academic success, and commitment both on and off the field.
The all-star matchup brought together graduating seniors from high schools across Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, uniting athletes who typically face one another as rivals during the regular season. Selected by coaches from across the conference, the Team SMAC roster reflected the depth of talent throughout Southern Maryland, with players representing programs large and small and showcasing the region’s collective commitment to competition, sportsmanship and leadership.
Team SMAC defeated the Prince George’s County All-Stars 31–9 in the Senior All-Star Game, further reinforcing Southern Maryland’s reputation for developing high-performing student-athletes.

SMAC Coaching Staff Reflects Regional Collaboration And Leadership
The all-star game also featured a selected coaching staff from across the region, leading Team SMAC in the postseason showcase. Representing several Southern Maryland schools, the 2025 Team SMAC coaches included:
- Coach Sneade – Offensive Coordinator, Calvert High School
- Coach Lux – Special Teams & Linebackers, Great Mills High School
- Coach Cannon – Offensive Line, Thomas Stone High School
- Coach Ankrah – Defensive Line, Great Mills High School
- Coach Parrish – Defensive Backs, Westlake High School
Individual Awards Spotlight Charles County’s Best
In addition to Owens’ scholarship recognition, two other Charles County seniors were recently honored by the Southern Maryland Football Coaches Association (SMFCA) for their standout performances during the 2025 season:
- Kyler Ferriera, quarterback, North Point High School – Offensive Player of the Year
- Sima Saavedra, linebacker, La Plata High School – Defensive Player of the Year
