The Bureau of Census released the American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates for 2008 this week. Demographic statistics for St. Maryโs County continue to be favorable.
Here are a few examples. Our median income increased to $80,624, up 6.4% over last year, and $10,000 more than the state, which remained the highest in the nation. St. Maryโs population also remained the youngest in the state with a median age of 34.6. This is three years less than the state average. We have the second-highest percentage of households that are married-couple families with children under 18. Interestingly, St. Maryโs also had the highest percentage of veterans with 19.2% of the civilian population over 18. This is almost double the state average of 10.4%. These three data points reveal continued prosperity with a population that is relatively young and includes a strong presence of families with school-age children. Thereโs also a large sector of veterans and, by extension a population interested in retiring here. Thereโs much more information that we will sift through.
For now, consider the uniqueness of our County and how it is reflected in our demographics
