RIDGE, Md. — The crisp autumn air and joyful laughter filled the grounds of St. Michael’s School on Saturday as families from across Southern Maryland gathered for the school’s first-ever Harvest Festival.

From pony rides and cotton candy to games, raffles and local vendors, there was truly something for everyone. Children raced from booth to booth with painted faces and sticky fingers, while parents and neighbors caught up with friends old and new during the family-friendly celebration.

“This was such a wonderful day,” one attendee shared. “You could really feel the sense of community. It was like Ridge came alive.”

The event featured hayrides, crafts, local DJ and recording artist Jeff Barickman and delicious treats, showcasing the creativity, energy and dedication of St. Michael’s staff, students and parish volunteers. The smiles said it all; the inaugural Harvest Festival was a resounding success.

Amanda Cullison, event organizer and St. Michael’s parent, said the goal was to create a day that truly reflected the heart of the school.

“The Harvest Festival was our way of bringing the community together and inviting everyone to see what St. Michael’s is all about,” she shared. “We wanted our neighbors to experience the warmth, joy and connection that make this place so special.”

Cullison, who has two sons at St. Michael’s — Tucker in first grade and Ellis in Preschool 3 — said her family’s experience inspired her to help organize the event.

“I chose St. Michael’s because of what it represents — faith, family and community,” she said. “It’s more than just a school; it’s truly a family.”

Principal Mary Van Ryswick, now in her first year leading St. Michael’s after three decades of teaching there, said the festival is just one of many exciting things happening on campus.

“It’s going great,” she said. “We have happy students, dedicated teachers and a community that supports everything we do. We’ve added wonderful new opportunities this year –including our Junior National Honor Society and the return of our school band. There’s such a positive energy here.”

Van Ryswick said she hopes the Harvest Festival inspires more families to visit and see what makes the school special.

“We’re inviting everyone to our Open House on November 12, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.,” she said. “Whether you’re a prospective family, a community member, or a current parent, you’re welcome to visit classrooms, meet our teachers and see the amazing things happening at St. Michael’s.”

The Harvest Festival will now become an annual tradition, bringing together faith, fellowship and fun for the entire community.

The St. Michael’s community invites everyone to join them next year for another day of celebration — and to experience for themselves why St. Michael’s was voted Best of Southern Maryland in Private School, Preschool, Summer Camp, Place of Worship and Education Services for 2025.
