The Town of North Beach continues a New Yearโ€™s Day tradition it started during the 1990s. The annual Polar Bear Plunge is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. Town officials have affirmed the run into the chilly waters of the Chesapeake Bay will be held rain, snow or shine.

This year the plungers who choose to officially register by paying a fee will be aiding the bay.

Starting atย 11 a.m. Jan. 1, individuals wishing to register, sign a waiver and pay the $25 fee may do so at the North Beach Welcome Center at the boardwalk/fishing pier intersection: With this registration a participant will receive aย blankย certificate and a plunge T-shirt, which are available on a first come, first served basis.

There is no fee to plunge, but each participant must sign a waiver. Plungers who opt not to pay the fee will receive a blank plunge certificate only. For those who don’t want to plunge will find plenty of room on the boardwalk to watch the spectacle.

North Beach Town officials said the net proceeds from the Polar Bear Plunge will benefit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
