On Tuesday, June 8 at 3 p.m., the new Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center in Prince Frederick will hold its grand opening ceremony. The new, state-of-the-art aquatic center is loaded with features and offers year-round fun, exercise and entertainment.
Once opened, the facility will also become one of the largest capacity facilities in Calvert County with a 1,600 person capacity. The aquatic center features 41,000 square feet housing an enclosed pool under the pre-engineered aluminum structure supporting a translucent fiberglass roof featuring opening panels.
The two-level support building adjacent is conventional steel and concrete construction with an upper spectator mezzanine gallery which seats 260 spectators. The project cost a total of $19.9 million including design, land and construction. The facility was named for Edward T. Hall, a Calvert County native who served in the Maryland Senate from 1958 until his death in 1978. He was also a co-founder of the Calvert Independent newspaper in 1940.
The heated competition pool with diving area is 50 meters long by 25 yards wide and features a movable bulkhead allowing for multiple certified competitive swimming course configurations. The pool depths ranges from 4 to 12.9 feet, a one,- three- and half-meter diving boards and four 10-lane lap areas and an open recreation swim area.
The leisure pool offers depths that range from zero to three feet, beach style/ramp and ladder entry, three slides, in-water climbing features, water drop buckets and more.
The therapy pool is 28 feet by 52 feet with depths ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 feet with an exercise well of eight feet, step and ladder entry, three sets of adjustable walking bars, hand rails around inside perimeter and an underwater bench.
The facility also has a spa/hot tub for adults 18 years of age and older. The spa is three feet deep and heated to 100 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. It has step entry and seating for nine people.
There are menโs and womenโs locker room each with individual showers with changing stalls, an automatic hand/hair dryer, daily use lockers, restrooms. In addition to the locker rooms are family changing rooms that have handicapped accessible showers, restroom and a child changing station.
However, there are even more features in this brand new facility. There is a fitness room that has a secure access for pass holders and daily admission patrons 18 years of age and older at no additional cost. The fitness area contains three matrix treadmills, two matrix ellipticals, one matrix hybrid bike, one paramount multi-functional trainer (wheelchair accessible), one paramount multi-press incline/shoulder press combo machine, one paramount leg extension/seated leg curl machine, one paramount lat/row combo machine and one paramount low back/abdominal machine.
The aquatic centerโs hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. Admission is a very reasonable $6 for adults from 18 to 59, children 3 to 17 are only $4, one to two only $2 and under one, free. Seniors 60 and over
