Still Waiting: Maple Syrup’s Search For A Forever Home Continues

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Weeks after capturing the hearts of BayNet readers, Maple Syrup is still waiting for the one thing she wants most: a family of her own.

The sweet, affectionate dog has spent much of the past several months bouncing between foster care and the shelter system through no fault of her own. Despite receiving an outpouring of community support and attention following previous coverage, Maple Syrup remains available for adoption at the St. Mary’s County Animal Adoption and Resource Center.

Now, shelter volunteers are hoping her latest chapter will finally lead to a happy ending.

A New Chapter After Heartworm Treatment

One of the biggest changes in Maple Syrup’s journey is that she has completed the most restrictive phase of her heartworm treatment and is once again able to enjoy the simple joys of being a dog.

For months, activity restrictions limited her ability to run, play and burn off energy while receiving treatment. Today, Maple Syrup is free to enjoy outdoor playtime, zoomies and long walks.

“She’s fine. She can run. She can do all the things that regular dogs do,” foster volunteer Tammie Johnson said in an interview with The BayNet.

The improvement marks a major milestone for a dog who has overcome significant medical challenges while continuing to maintain her loving personality.

A Dog Who Thrives On Routine And Connection

Johnson has fostered Maple Syrup twice and spent more than two months caring for her in a home environment.

During that time, she watched Maple Syrup flourish with structure, daily routines and plenty of affection.

“She was really, really good,” Johnson said. “She started walking really well. We would walk around the yard, and she played hard. I spent a lot of time with her when I was home.”

Their days quickly settled into a predictable rhythm that Maple Syrup came to love. Each morning included outdoor time, breakfast and play, while evenings were filled with cuddles and squeaky toys.

According to Johnson, Maple Syrup quickly learned her routine and eagerly anticipated each part of her day.

Friendly, Affectionate And Great With People

Those who have spent time with Maple Syrup consistently describe her as a people-focused dog who craves companionship.

Johnson said Maple Syrup forms strong bonds with her caregivers and genuinely enjoys being around people. Volunteers at the shelter have also witnessed her affectionate nature firsthand.

Visitors who meet Maple Syrup often discover a dog eager for attention, belly rubs and quality time outside of her kennel.

Her loving temperament has made it especially difficult for volunteers to see her remain in the shelter environment for so long.

Waiting For A Second Chance

While Maple Syrup has experienced adoption opportunities in the past, circumstances outside of her control ultimately brought her back to the shelter.

For Johnson, watching Maple Syrup return after experiencing life in a home has been heartbreaking.

“The shelter is the worst place in the world for any dog,” Johnson said. “You get that taste of getting out of the shelter and then being brought back. That’s so hard on a dog.”

Even after her foster periods ended, Johnson continued visiting Maple Syrup regularly, making time to walk her, play with her and provide the companionship she craves.

“I come every day and spend time with her,” Johnson said.

The Right Home Is Still Out There

Shelter staff and volunteers believe Maple Syrup’s perfect match is still waiting to find her.

She is looking for a family willing to provide patience, consistency and the stability that allows her to thrive. In return, adopters will gain a loyal companion whose greatest joy is simply being with her people.

As another summer begins, volunteers are hopeful that someone reading her story will finally be the person who gives Maple Syrup the second chance she deserves.

For now, Maple Syrup continues to wait — tail wagging, heart open and ready to start the next chapter of her life.

Those interested in meeting Maple Syrup can contact the St. Mary’s County Animal Adoption and Resource Center or visit the shelter during adoption hours.
