An eighth-grade student at Spring Ridge Middle School in Lexington Park is facing charges after an incident at the school Thursday morning, April 3, state authorities reported.
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, a trash can was set ablaze inside a sixth-grade girls’ bathroom around 10 a.m. “The fire was extinguished by staff, using water from the sink inside the bathroom,” Dfm. John Ray stated. “The fire destroyed a plastic trash container in the bathroom but did not cause any damage to the structure. The investigation revealed an eighth-grade juvenile female was responsible for setting the fire while MSA testing was occurring.”
No one was injured and the damage estimate is $15. Neither a smoke alarm nor the building’s sprinkler system activated when the fire occurred. No firefighters were dispatched to the school, which is located on Three Notch Road.
The juvenile was charged with arson of a trash container, second-degree malicious burning and disturbing the operation of school. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
