Sunday Conversations is a great time to enjoy books and presentations with local Chesapeake authors and artists as they talk about the process used to conceive, research, write, and illustrate their books at the Calvert Marine Museum. The free series, hosted by the Museum Store, begins on September 26 at 2:00 p.m. and will continue in October, November, and January through March, 2011. All books and featured items will be available for purchase in the museum store.

The Monster Shark’s Tooth
In this children’s book, the young protagonist travels through time into the Miocene period to confront a real Megalodon shark. Talk with author Peter Vogt about the inspiration for his story, and illustrator Tim Scheirer about the process of bringing it to life through his art. Tim, who is also a member of the exhibits staff at the museum, will have original artwork created for the book on display.

Saving Squeak
Jennifer Keats Curtis has written a new book that celebrates the museum’s own otter, Squeak; special guest appearance by CMM otter and Linda Hanna, the aquarist who appears in the book. The story teaches children about otters and the importance of rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife that live among humans.

Dishing Up Maryland: 150 Recipes from the Alleghenies to the Chesapeake Bay
Lucie Snodgrass has created a culinary portrait of Maryland in this new cookbook. The stories of the people and the places where she found her recipes are shared. Enjoy samples from the cookbook after the presentation. Books signed by Snodgrass make an ideal holiday purchase!

Pure SEA GLASS
Sea glass expert, Richard LaMotte, and his book with its incredible photographs presents some of the best sea glass ever collected, along with samples of the classical glassware that is often its source. The presentation will be combined with a special focus on sea glass jewelry in the store. Attendees may bring their own sea glass samples for identification or to have it made into customized jewelry. Sea glass will be available for purchase and a unique piece of wearable sea glass art may be created for you.

African Americans of Calvert County
William Poe documents one of the oldest African American communities in Maryland, established when the first settlers arrived. The beautiful photographs and documents in this book give a glimpse into the past of these proud people and their descendents. Mr. Poe will be available for book signings after the presentation, along with a special tour of the new African American exhibit in the Maritime History Hall.
