COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A recent ranking conducted by Time placed three Maryland schools among the top 500 universities in the world in 2026. The University of Maryland is quite popular among Maryland students, but it’s not the only school that ranks highly across the state.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore, came in at No. 436 on Time’s list, while the University of Maryland, College Park, was ranked at No. 95. Perhaps the most impressive ranking is Johns Hopkins University, which Time ranked in the 12th position out of 500 top schools.
A well-known research university founded in 1876 in Baltimore City, Johns Hopkins University is a leader in public health and medicine research. The school has campuses across Baltimore and in countries like Italy and China, securing its place on the global stage.
In the article, Time further explained its conclusions from its own research data:
“Our own research using big data to study the outcomes of millions of college students over time underscores this point in the United States. Fewer than 1% of Americans attend the 12 ‘Ivy-Plus’ colleges (the eight Ivy League schools plus Stanford, MIT, Duke, and the University of Chicago), yet they account for over 13% of those in the top 0.1% of earners, a quarter of U.S. senators, half of all Rhodes scholars, and three-fourths of Supreme Court justices appointed in the last half-century.”
Further to the point, the following excerpt explains how acceptance into certain universities affects income distribution and overall success.
“These institutions don’t merely select talented students but directly change their life trajectories. Comparing waitlisted students who were accepted vs. rejected from these institutions essentially by chance, we find that those who attend an Ivy-Plus college are far more likely to reach the top 1% of the income distribution, work at prestigious firms, and achieve success in many other dimensions. Selective colleges have extraordinary influence.”
The No. 1 spot on Time’s list was the University of Oxford, while Yale University and Stanford University took the second and third spots, respectively. As a final note, Harvard ranked in the sixth spot. Out of the top 10 schools, seven are located in the United States, while the other three reside in the United Kingdom.
On the topic of diversity versus meritocracy, Time explained that many participating in the debate often miss the finer details regarding how the two concepts connect. The article author went on to write, “Admitting students to top-ranked colleges on the basis of their own merit would increase the representation of students from middle-class families on college campuses and expand the talent pool for businesses to hire.”
Time’s article further cemented multiple Maryland universities as major centers of learning throughout the world, and Johns Hopkins University is particularly notable, taking the 12th spot.
