ย The Mayor and Town Council of the Town of La Plata are pleased to announce the Townโ€™s schedule of special events for 2011. ย Again this year, the Town will host a number of family-oriented festivals, holiday activities, and concerts. ย All events take place on the grounds of La Plata Town Hall, are open to the general public, and are free to attend.ย

The first large festival will be held on Saturday, April 30 from ย noon to 4 p.m.. ย โ€œCelebrate La Plataโ€ will feature activities and amusements for children, vendors, entertainment, and food. ย A similar Fall Festival is planned for Sunday, October 23, 2011. ย The โ€œ4th of July Watermelon Bashโ€ returns on Independence Day, which is on a Monday this year. ย That event will include water activities and amusements, watermelon contests for all ages, hot dogs, and other food items. ย The โ€œLa Plata Chili Cook Offโ€ returns on Saturday, September 10.ย

The La Plata Summer Concert Series kicks off on the Friday before Memorial Day and continues every Friday night through the end of September. ย Free concerts are held outdoors on the west lawn of La Plata Town Hall starting at 7 p.m. ย Concert goers are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating. ย Food is available for sale, and coolers are allowed, but no alcohol. ย There is also a separate but visible play area for children.

A variety of music styles will be presented each week during the โ€œSummer Concert Seriesโ€ with 11 returning bands performing as well as 8 new acts on the schedule. ย The line-up includes rock, country, bluegrass, jazz, concert band, Irish, oldies, and contemporary pop. ย Returning bands include the audience-favorite military bands and such local talents as the 25th Hour Band and Road House. ย In response to an audience survey, several new acts were added to the series including the local bluegrass band Port Tobacco Pickers, rock band Cover Story, and Calvert County recording artist, the Eric Scott Band.

A complete line up of bands scheduled to perform is on the Townโ€™s website and includes links to videos of the performers.ย

Other events on the calendar include 3 Community Yard Sales scheduled for May, July, and October; a Memorial Day ceremony; the โ€œSalute to Veterans Parade and Ceremonyโ€ in November; and a Holiday Gathering in December.ย

โ€œThis kind of family entertainment brings people together,โ€ said Town of La Plata Mayor, Roy G. Hale. โ€œWhen people come out and have fun together, when they share the experience of music or childrenโ€™s activities, they feel more connected to the community. ย That connection is what gives the Town of La Plata its special character.โ€

A brochure with event information and schedules is available at La Plata Town Hall and will be distributed to ย merchants in the Town of La Plata. ย A pdf version can be downloaded at the Townโ€™s website, www.TownofLaPlata.org. ย  For more information, contact Marcia Keeth, Sp
