LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Arts Council (SMCAC) celebrated a successful 2024, marking significant contributions to the local arts community through public art projects, events, and grants.

One of the year’s highlights was the opening of a gallery at St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen, with additional galleries planned for MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and the Charlotte Hall branch of the St. Mary’s County Library. In addition, the council supported the completion of a mural at the St. Mary’s County Health Department Health Hub and announced plans for a mural at the Three Notch Theatre to commemorate Tulagi Place.

“We love what we do, and we do it for you! We know art makes the fabric of our community stronger,” said SMCAC Executive Director Susie Glauner in a statement. “Art brings us together, providing opportunities to share experiences and find common ground.”

SMCAC also sponsored the inaugural Community, Culture and Cuisine event, which celebrated the diverse communities of Lexington Park, further showcasing the organization’s commitment to inclusivity through the arts.

Another major milestone for the council in 2024 was the awarding of more than $81,000 in grants to 29 recipients, ensuring access to arts programming for both residents and visitors. Glauner emphasized the economic benefits of supporting the arts, citing data from the Maryland State Arts Council: “Every dollar invested in the arts yields over twice as much in economic impact. It literally pays to support the arts!”

Looking ahead to 2025, SMCAC plans to unveil a major new capital project and expand public art initiatives, partnerships, and programs. “There is so much more to come!” Glauner noted.

To sustain and grow its efforts, SMCAC is encouraging community members to support the arts through donations, which start at $25. Corporate sponsorship packages will also be introduced in 2025, offering benefits for employees.
