A two-alarm fire raged this afternoon in Lexington Park. Dozens of volunteer fire company trucks from Bay District, Hollywood, Solomons, Valley Lee, Leonardtown and Pax River departments responded to Valley Estates Drive, off Rt. 235, for a blaze that left only a smoldering shell where one home had stood, and damaged an adjacent house.
Firefighters arrived shortly before 1 p.m. to find an end-unit townhouse fully engulfed in flames, and they worked for nearly an hour before it was fully put under control. In the end, one unit was totally destroyed and the neighboring unit damaged.
Rescuers initially feared residents were trapped inside their homes, but firefighters were able to sweep through the suspect areas and confirm no-one was trapped. About that time the second floor collapsed and responders began breaking all the windows and cut a large hole in the roof for ventilation.
There were no injuries, but several firefighters on the scene received light medical treatment as a precaution.
A representative from the state Fire Marshal’s Office arrived on the scene to investigate the cause.
