PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools welcomed two new school principals at the May 7 Board of Education meeting.
The board appointed Amanda Merillat as the new principal of Windy Hill Elementary and Chandra Fleet as the new principal of Plum Point Middle School. Superintendent Dr. Marcus Newsome introduced the candidates and read their achievements both in and out of Calvert County.
Before her appointment, Amanda Merillat was serving as the assistant principal of Sunderland Elementary. Her prior roles included dean and instructional coach at St. Leonard Elementary, instructional coach and teacher at Sunderland Elementary, a teacher at Calvert Elementary and a teacher in North Carolina. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Coastal Carolina University and a master’s degree in leadership, administration and supervision from the College of Notre Dame.
In her remarks following the motion to confirm her appointment, Merillat said she was honored and grateful to serve as the next principal of Windy Hill Elementary.
“I believe every child who walks through our doors deserves to feel safe, valued, challenged, and supported, and I’m fully committed to ensuring that happens every single day.”
Merillat added that her leadership will be rooted in collaboration, communication and shared database decision-making.
Chandra Fleet is currently serving as the assistant principal of Calvert Middle School. She previously served as the acting principal at Calvert Middle, as an instructional assistant in Prince George’s County and as a high school special education teacher. Fleet has a bachelor’s degree in exceptional education from Bethune-Cookman University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Trinity Washington University. She’s also a Ph.D. candidate in educational policy and leadership management from Walden University.
Fleet spoke at the meeting and said she was grateful for the opportunity — and it was one she didn’t take lightly.
“As I journey into this new role, my goal will be to get to know the kids, the staff, and the families at Plum Point Middle School,” Fleet said. “My motto is that children are my business. And I’m looking forward to families being my partners so we can continue to do good work at Plum Point Middle.”
