What was the attitude of the early Christians towards war and military service? Was the early church dominated by pacifists or did it encompass people from all walks of life, including the Roman military?

John Shean, of Fiorello H. LaGuardia Community College/CUNY, will address these questions and more at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the public lecture “Under the Sign of the Cross: The Roman Army and Christianity” on Thursday, Oct. 30, starting at 8 p.m. in the Auerbach Auditorium, St. Mary’s Hall. The event, sponsored by the Department of History, is free and open to the public. St. Mary’s College is located at 18952 E. Fisher Road, St. Mary’s City, Md. 20686.
