Waldorf, MD — A Newburg man was struck by two cars and killed late Thursday evening Aug. 27 while he was walking along Mattawoman-Beantown Road in Waldorf. The Maryland State Police have identified the deceased as Johnny J. Phelps, 51.
Troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack arrived on the scene and spoke with Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the scene. The state police investigation revealed a 1998 Dodge Avenger driven by Fakiha A. Yahya of Clinton was northbound on Mattawoman-Beantown Road when Phelps allegedly walked into her lane of travel and was struck. Phelps was thrown into lane # 3 of northbound 301 where he was struck by a 1998 Honda Accord being operated by Mark L. Nebo of La Plata. Phelps was pronounced deceased on scene.
The mishap occurred at 10:30 p.m. Investigating state troopers from the La Plata Barrack were Corporal Edelen and Trooper Truelove. No charges were placed in the incident.
Update August 28, 12:40 p.m.
A spokesman at the MSP La Plata barrack has confirmed that one person was killed in an accident on Mattawoman Beantown Road.
A spokeswoman said that the accident is still under investigation and more information will be released later today.
