A Lusby man has died as the result of a motorcycle accident Thursday on Route 4 in St. Leonard.

On 12/22/2011 at approximately 1537 hours members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau and Crash Reconstruction Team responded to MD Route 4 approximately 6/10th of a mile south of Ball Road, St. Leonard, MD for a report of a serious motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.ย Upon arrival units located a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle against the guardrail. The operator Eugene Mctyere Smith III, 59, of Lusby was ejected and positioned near the motorcycle.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Smith was traveling south bound on MD Route 4 when the 2004 Harley Davidson he was operating gradually left the roadway.ย Upon leaving the roadway the motorcycle entered the grass median, which separates the north and south bound lanes of MD Route 4. Shortly after leaving the pavement the motorcycle struck the guardrail causing Smith to be ejected from the vehicle.
Smith was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by the Emergency Room Staff.
The final cause of death is pending the autopsy, which is to be performed on 12/23/2011 at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, MD.

12/22/11Due to a serious auto accident involving a motorcycle there are traffic delays on southbound Route 4 at Ball Road in St. Leonard. Traffic is being diverting onto the shoulder of the road.

UPDATE 4:59PM: All lanes are open and traffic is flowing at a normal pace.
