UPDATE 6:15 a.m. Maryland State Police Press Release

Newburg, MD – On Dece. 28 at approximately 9:30 p.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack responded to a single vehicle collision in which a pedestrian was struck in the area of northbound Route 301 at southbound Branchville Road.

A preliminary investigation conducted by troopers indicates that a 1998 Lincoln Towncar, operated by Diana Deguzman, 49 of La Plata, was travelling northbound on Rt. 301 just prior to Branchville Road in lane #1 and struck Melissa Claggett, 35 of Indian Head, who was walking in the roadway. Medical treatment was provided to Claggett, but due to the severity of her injuries, she was pronounced deceased on scene at 9:36 p.m.

Diana Dguzman and the two passengers in her vehicle, Dottie Parris and Alisa Deguzman were treated and released on scene reporting no injuries.

Pedestrian error is believed to be the causes of this collision. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian.

UPDATE 10:36 p.m.

Faulkner, MD – Police in Charles County have confirmed that one person has died as a result of being struck by a motor vehicle on Crain Highway in the area of Budds Creek Road. Police expect a portion of northbound Crain Highway (US 301) to be closed for an extended period of time. Troopers from the Maryland State Police are conducting the investigation. Motorists traveling on Crain Highway in southern Charles County and approaching the accident scene that the closure is between Carmel Drive and Nettle Place. Motorists are advised to re-route down Edge Hill Road to be able to continue on northbound Crain Highway.

UPDATE 10 p.m.

Faulkner, MD – The Charles County Sheriff’s Office advises motorists that northbound Crain Highway (US 301) between Carmel Drive and Nettle Place will be shut down for an extended amount of time due to the accident. Motorists are advised to re-route down Edge Hill Road to be able to continue on northbound Crain Highway. Maryland State Police troopers are handling the investigation.

Faulkner, MD – At approximately 9:30 p.m. authorities in Charles County reported an accident involving a pedestrian on Crain Highway in the area of Budds Creek Road. Motorists bound for the area are advised to use caution.
