Update May 3, 2007:  LA PLATA – Today, Charles County Sheriff’s Department Information Officer Kristen Timko released word that  on April 22 at 10:15 p.m., Officer W. Saunders arrested Christopher DeWayne Jenkins, 28, of Charlotte Hall at the District 1 Station in La Plata.

According to Officer Timko, Jenkins turned himself in without incident.  He was wanted for shooting his cousin, Officer J. Thompson, on April 15th at Thompson’s apartment where Jenkins was then living.  Thompson was off-duty at the time.

Jenkins was charged with first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and using a handgun in the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Charles County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.

Indictments were filed against Jenkins on April 30th.  At this point, he is scheduled to be arraigned in Charles County Circuit Court on June 8, 2007.

No word yet about where Jenkins was during that week police were hunting for him or why he decided to turn himself in.

Update April 16, 2007:  LA PLATA – The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its search, Monday afternoon, for the man who yesterday shot his cousin, a Sheriff’s deputy, at the apartment they shared in Waldorf.

Major Crimes Unit detectives got a warrant yesterday evening for the arrest of Christopher DeWayne Jenkins, 33.  The warrant charges Jenkins with first- and second-degree assault, using a handgun in the commission of a violent crime and reckless endangerment.

According to courthouse records, Jenkins was already awaiting trial for possessing narcotics with intent to distribute from earlier this year.  These latest charges take their places on his criminal record which already contains assault, robbery with a deadly weapon, car-jacking & theft in 1995; violation of probation in 2002; check fraud in 2004; and assault in 2005. 

Jenkins’ residence with his cousin in law enforcement seems to have been a final resort and an attempt by his family to rehabilitate him.
