Leonardtown, MD — Cancer and treatment to fight it can be rough on anyone, but especially so for an energetic three-year-old boy. Nolan Scully was diagnosed with soft-tissue cancer about a month ago and has undergone five chemo treatments so far. โ€œHe has his up and down days,โ€ Nolanโ€™s father Jonathan told The BayNet about the treatment and its effects.

Jonathan Scully is chief the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department (VFD). His family has deep roots in the volunteer service, including his father, wife, grandmother and grandfather, and numerous uncles and cousins. They have been involved not only in the Leonardtown VFD but also the fire departments in Hollywood and Mechanicsville.

St. Maryโ€™s Countyโ€™s volunteer emergency responders have a reputation of taking care of their own. So it is with Nolanโ€™s courageous fight with cancer. The Leonardtown VFD is sponsoring a Fight Like a Kid Walk and Run on Saturday Dec. 19 beginning at 9 a.m. at the firehouse. The $20 registration fee will go to Nolanโ€™s family to help offset the costs of treatment, travel and housing expenses.

If you would like to participate you can register at the firehouse on Lawrence Avenue nightly from 5 to 8 p.m. or you can do so the morning of the 5K walk/run.
