Hollywood, MD – Sisterhood is the spice of life, all the way to family or sororities or even girl groups like Destinyโ€™s Child. Sisters hold a bond that can never be broken and you can always count on them for whatever you need. August 6 marks National Sisterโ€™s Day. National Sisterโ€™s Day doesnโ€™t have an exact origin but it was first celebrated Aug. 7, 2007 and is observed every first Sunday in August.

India also has a similar holiday around this time as well. Raksha Bandhan, or Rakhi, is a Hindu festival that honors the bond of siblings. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Shravan (July-August) and this year, the holiday falls on Monday, Aug. 7. In the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a rakhi, a silk bracelet that symbolizes protection and the bind between siblings, on their brother wrist and pray they have a long life and brothers give their sister a gift as a vow to always protect them.

Although National Sister Day doesnโ€™t have deep-rooted cultural tie in America, itโ€™s important we treasure and strengthen our relationship with our siblings. So celebrate National Sister Day by kicking it with your sister or โ€˜sister from another misterโ€™ and showing her how much you love and appreciate her.
