INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing handgun charges after a deputy said he was stopped for driving 116 mph in a 50 mph zone and had a loaded handgun in the glovebox, according to charging documents.
Rayvell Garrett Thomas, 28, of Waldorf, was charged with having a handgun in a vehicle and having a loaded handgun in a vehicle. He also was cited for driving at a speed exceeding the limit.
A deputy was traveling north on Indian Head Highway on May 6, 2026, when he saw a gray passenger car traveling southbound at a high rate of speed in the area of Chapmans Landing Road in Indian Head, according to charging documents.
The deputy confirmed with radar that the vehicle was traveling 116 mph in a posted 50 mph zone and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle, described as a gray 2013 Audi S5 with Florida registration, pulled into the Dash In on Indian Head Highway and stopped.
A second officer approached the vehicle with the deputy and identified the driver as Thomas through his Florida driver’s license, according to the report. Thomas allegedly said he did not realize he was going that fast and reached for his driver’s license and registration.
When Thomas opened the glovebox to get his registration, he pulled his hand back and told officers he had a handgun in the glovebox, charging documents state.
Thomas told officers he did not have a Maryland carry permit. The deputy removed the handgun, later identified as a Glock 43, from the glovebox, according to the report.
A search of the vehicle did not find any other evidence.
Thomas was transported to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. Court records show he was given a $2,500 unsecured personal bond on May 6, 2026.
A hearing is set for June 23, 2026, at Charles District Court.
Under Maryland law, the listed handgun charges carry up to 10 years of incarceration and up to $5,000 in fines if Thomas is convicted and sentenced to the maximum consecutive terms.
