May 25th and 26th at the Calvert Marine Museum

For the fourth consecutive year, Calvert Marine Museum will host the Chesapeake Catboat Associationโ€™s Patuxent River Shootout.ย  Catboats from around the Bay will gather in the museumโ€™s boat basin late in the day on May 25th and all-day on the 26th.ย  On the 26th the 15 to 25 foot vessels will depart the Calvert Marine Museumโ€™s boat basin for their annual race, the Patuxent River Shootout.ย  The start and finish of the race can be viewed from the Boardwalk on Solomonโ€™s Island.ย  Weather dependent, there may be one or two races.ย  The boats will return to the basin, late afternoon, where they can be viewed by museum guests.

The catboat design was most popular in the 19th and 20th century and was the waterway workhorse from New England to the Chesapeake Bay.ย  They are very identifiable by their single gaff rig sail, wide beam and barn door rudder. Also present will be a few modern day designed catboats which are popular in the Solomonโ€™s area waters.
