LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — For Demetrious Carroll, filmmaking started with grief.

Today, the Lexington Park native has a feature film streaming on major platforms, including Amazon Prime and Apple TV, with a release on Tubi scheduled for August. But long before the distribution deals and production company, there was a 12-year-old boy trying to make sense of losing his mother.

Born and raised in Lexington Park, Carroll describes his childhood as fairly typical until tragedy changed everything.

“My mom raised me by herself until she was murdered when I was 12 years old,” Carroll said. “After that, I didn’t have either parent.”

Even through the hardship, Carroll found himself drawn to creative expression. Music, movies and storytelling became an outlet. What he didn’t realize at the time was that those interests would eventually become his life’s work.

His filmmaking journey began with a music video and short film titled “Darlene’s Story,” a project inspired by his mother’s life.

“It was a short retelling of my mom’s story,” Carroll said. “I really enjoyed the process. It had more layers than just making a music video.”

The response encouraged him to keep going.

Soon afterward, Carroll wrote a song about fathers being separated from their children. Working alongside local filmmaker Vincent Chapman of Sargas Media, the pair turned the concept into a short film. The project eventually evolved into a full-length feature after additional filming and months of production.

What started as a passion project became something much bigger. Things became real when Carroll’s film entered the distribution process.

“The first step was passing quality control,” he said. “It’s a rigorous process. The distributor contacted me and said they wanted to make it a priority release.”

Today, the film is available on multiple national streaming platforms, a milestone Carroll says validated years of work behind the scenes. The road there wasn’t easy.

Between coordinating cast schedules, managing production logistics and securing funding, Carroll encountered challenges familiar to many independent filmmakers. The project ultimately cost more than $10,000 to produce.

“I wrote it, produced it, executive produced it, starred in it and funded the whole thing myself,” he said.

Through the process, Carroll discovered something unexpected.

“I think I found my calling as a director,” he said. “When you start enjoying the things nobody else likes to do — the back-end work, the formatting, the details — that’s when you know you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing.”

Today, Carroll operates Top-Class Studios and is already looking toward bigger projects.

His current film focuses on the struggles of fathers fighting to remain involved in their children’s lives despite difficult family situations.

“I wanted to be a voice for fathers going through that situation,” he said. “I want people to see the effect it can have when a child grows up without their father.”

But Carroll’s vision extends beyond filmmaking.

He hopes his success can create opportunities for others throughout Southern Maryland.

“It means everything to me,” he said. “People think because we’re from a small place, nothing big can happen here. I want to show people that we can do anything anybody else can do. We can reach any heights Hollywood can.”

He envisions a future where local productions create jobs, showcase local businesses and help launch careers throughout the community.

“I have local clothing brands featured in my movies. People are already getting paid through these projects,” Carroll said. “My production company can create opportunities.”

His advice to aspiring creators is simple.

“Believe in yourself before anybody else does. Don’t wait until you have everything. Just start. Move like it’s going to happen before it actually happens,” Carroll said.

He points to his own experience as proof.

“I wrote ‘Her Own Child’ when I was broke,” he said. “You have to believe you’re going to achieve your goals even when you’re at the stage where you have nothing. That’s when belief matters the most.”

Looking ahead, Carroll is currently producing a film called “Survival Over Love,” written and directed by Taquan “Bink” Berry. The project is a collaboration between the two filmmakers and includes a cast of more than 50 community members.

For Carroll, the goal isn’t fame. It’s legacy.

“I want my name to represent quality, good business, positivity and opportunity,” he said.

Carroll also wanted to recognize the people who helped him along the way, including Vincent Chapman of Sargas Media, Taquan “Bink” Berry, production assistant Tasia Milburn, Barbie Maddox, Gee Woo, Emoni Brantley, his daughters Naturi and Demour Carroll, his grandmother Alma Young and his late mother, Darlene Dowsey.

He also credited Top-Class Studios for helping turn a personal dream into a growing platform for storytelling and opportunity.

And for a filmmaker who turned one of the darkest chapters of his life into a platform for storytelling, community building and hope, that legacy may already be taking shape.
