COBB ISLAND, Md. — A 38-foot boat sank Thursday evening at a marina off Cobb Island, prompting an emergency response and raising environmental concerns due to a fuel and oil spill.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:50 p.m. on April 10, 2025, at The RIVAH Restaurant and Marina located at 12364 Neale Sound Drive. The boat reportedly had been gradually taking on water for weeks before finally submerging. There were no occupants onboard at the time.

Authorities confirmed both the boat owner and marina management were aware of the ongoing issue prior to the vessel’s sinking. By the time units arrived, the boat was fully submerged, and responders were unsure how much fuel had leaked.

Hazardous Materials teams, including HM Spill 16 and HM20, deployed containment boom with the assistance of Boat 5A and additional support crews to prevent further spread of gasoline and oil from the submerged vessel.

Local officials contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and the Department of Natural Resources to share vessel information, outline potential hazards, and execute a mitigation strategy. Attempts to identify and contact the vessel’s owner were unsuccessful.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

The scene remains under monitoring, and further environmental assessments will be conducted as necessary. The public is advised to avoid the immediate area during ongoing operations.

  1. Who is responsible for allowing it to sink, especially since it had been taking on water for weeks???
