
CALIFORNIA, Md. — A California man was charged after deputies reported finding 30 suspected Oxycodone pills in a plastic baggie during an arrest at a hotel in California.
Walter Jay Brown Jr., 47, of California, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis.
The charge stems from a June 26, 2026, incident at the Super 8 hotel in the 22800 block of Three Notch Road in California.
Charging documents state a St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on scene at approximately 2 p.m. when he saw Brown walking around a vehicle in the parking lot.
The deputy reported confirming Brown had an active Maryland State Police warrant for failure to appear in a driving without a license case.
As the deputy approached Brown to place him in custody, Brown attempted to pull a plastic tie-off baggie from his left shorts pocket, charging documents state. Police reported Brown’s wife attempted to approach him as he tried to hand the baggie to her.
Brown was placed under arrest. During a search, deputies reported finding a plastic tie-off baggie containing 30 blueish-gray pills marked “M 30” on one side and “30” on the other side.
Charging documents state the pills were identified as suspected Oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance. Police reported Brown did not have a prescription, and the pills were not in proper prescription packaging.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Brown agreed to speak with the deputy and stated he did not have a prescription for the pills, according to charging documents.
Brown was released on recognizance June 26, court records show.
A trial is set for Aug. 13, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
