SOUTHERN MARYLAND — The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Southern Maryland, effective 2:16 p.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday, July 4.
Residents should be prepared for the potential of damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, heavy rainfall and isolated hail as strong thunderstorms develop across the region throughout the afternoon and evening.
Outdoor Fourth of July celebrations, cookouts and fireworks displays could be impacted by rapidly changing weather conditions. Those planning to spend time outside are encouraged to closely monitor forecasts and have a safe place to seek shelter if storms approach.
The National Weather Service advises residents to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard and avoid open areas, tall trees and bodies of water during thunderstorms.
Drivers should also use caution, as heavy rain may reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for your location, take immediate action and move to a sturdy building until the storm passes.
Stay tuned to local forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts throughout the evening.
