Calvert Library encourages parents of young children to make reading a habit from birth.

Reading with young children on a daily basis is a lifetime gift for everyone.ย  It builds a stronger relationship with your child and increases basic speech and communication skills. It also improves logical thinking, increases vocabulary, enhances concentration and discipline, helps ease transitions to major milestones or other potentially stressful experiences; all of which promote school readiness and a love of learning. And, letโ€™s not forget, it is just plain fun!ย

Visit a Calvert Library location to get started. We have created a craft for you to hold your bookmarks with a list of the books that you have read, or you can visit us online, click on the โ€œ500 by Fiveโ€ logo and track your progress there (www.calvert.lib.md.us). Or just come to Storytime, weโ€™ll give you all the details there, registration has already begun.

Calvert Libraryโ€™s โ€œ500 by Fiveโ€ initiative inspires Calvertโ€™s children to read 500 books by 5 years old.ย  If your child attends Storytime from birth, you will reach the goal.ย  If you read just one book a day to your child, you will have accomplished this goal before they even reach 2 years old!ย  Make reading together a pleasurable family tradition.ย  Be a part of 500 by Five!
