LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A Charles County Sheriff’s deputy has been suspended following his arrest on a second-degree assault charge involving a family member.
David Moats, 26, was taken into custody March 20, 2025, in St. Mary’s County and initially held without bond. A judge later released him on his own recognizance following a court appearance the next day.
Moats, a deputy with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office for a year and a half, was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, the agency said in a statement Thursday.
The department’s Office of Professional Responsibility has also launched an administrative investigation.
Moats is scheduled to appear in court for trial on April 21.
