LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A Mechanicsville man is accused of refusing to leave the ICU at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and resisting arrest before deputies found a concealed metal knuckle knife in his pocket, according to charging documents.
Antwand Lavare Johnson, 43, of Mechanicsville, was charged with trespassing on private property, resisting or interfering with arrest, and concealing a dangerous weapon.
A deputy responded to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital on May 8, 2026, for a report of a trespassing complaint involving a disturbance in the intensive care unit. Hospital security staff told deputies Johnson was causing a disturbance again for the second time that day and said they believed he was intoxicated, according to the report.
Police said Johnson was yelling at hospital staff and demanding that his father be transferred to a different hospital. After a deputy spoke with Johnson, he allegedly continued causing a disturbance and became belligerent, telling the deputy, “you are going to need back up.”
A charge nurse told deputies Johnson had previously been removed from the hospital on April 2, 2026, for being intoxicated and causing a disturbance, according to charging documents. Police said Johnson needed to be removed from the premises because of his behavior and was served a no-trespass order.
Deputies repeatedly told Johnson he had to leave the hospital or he would be arrested, according to the report. Johnson allegedly responded that he was not going to leave and began walking outside his father’s room into the ICU hallway, where he said deputies were going to have to call more people because he was not going to be banned from seeing his father.
Police said deputies attempted to arrest Johnson for trespassing and told him to put his hands behind his back. Johnson allegedly refused, placed his back against a wall and then tried to walk away while holding his hands above his head so deputies could not reach them.
Deputies repeatedly ordered Johnson to put his hands behind his back and stop resisting, according to the report. Police said Johnson continued pulling away from deputies before force was used and he was taken into custody.
A search incident to arrest found a metal knuckle knife concealed in Johnson’s pocket, according to charging documents.
Johnson was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Court records show he was given a $1,000 unsecured personal bond that same day.
A hearing is set for June 25, 2026, at St. Mary’s District Court.
Under Maryland law, the listed charges carry up to six years and 90 days of incarceration and up to $6,500 in fines if Johnson is convicted and sentenced to the maximum consecutive terms.
