PORT REPUBLIC, Md. — A Port Republic man is facing multiple charges after deputies say he drove into a Calvert County neighborhood known for drug activity with two passengers, a suspended license, and suspected cocaine paraphernalia in his pocket.

According to court documents filed in Calvert County District Court, Reginald Simmons Tyler, 48, was observed driving a gold Toyota Corolla into the Silverwood neighborhood around 5:30 p.m. on April 26, 2025. A deputy on patrol noted what he described as “unusual behavior,” including the vehicle’s occupants allegedly staring at him while entering and exiting the neighborhood. Based on that behavior and an inoperable taillight, the deputy initiated a traffic stop near the Silverwood Senior Apartments.

Tyler told deputies he was giving a ride to a female passenger who was tired. A search of the vehicle was conducted after the vehicle’s owner gave consent. Deputies say they recovered a glass smoking device, two rubber containers, small green containers, white powder believed to be a cutting agent, and small rocks suspected to be crack cocaine. All items were located in the back seat area and, according to the deputy, concealed beneath a passenger’s feet.

The woman told deputies she had smoked crack with Tyler and another passenger earlier that morning around 4 a.m. The second passenger later admitted the glass smoking device belonged to him but claimed it was used for smoking marijuana.

Tyler was searched on scene. Deputies say they found a burned copper filter with cocaine residue in his pocket. When asked, Tyler allegedly claimed he did not know it was there. Deputies later confirmed that Tyler’s South Carolina license was suspended and that he did not hold a Maryland license.

He was placed under arrest and charged with driving on a suspended license and possession of CDS paraphernalia. The paraphernalia charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $500 fine.

One of Tyler’s passengers was also arrested and, according to charging documents, later admitted to having a bag of cocaine concealed in his pants while being transported to the detention center. That individual was charged separately.

Tyler was released on his own recognizance following his initial appearance. A trial is scheduled for May 28 at Calvert County District Court.
